Regulations on the Management of Academic Status of Oversea Undergraduate Students

Article 1 In the period of registration, oversea students shall attend medical examination, and those who are qualified will get academic status. Diagnosed by appointed hospitals, students who are examined and found to have certain illness, which is considered to have influence on study but can be cured in short time, shall NOT be registered and could retain admission qualification for one year and accept treatment outside university. For those students,they do not have student status temporarily. If they are fully recovered in the period of medical treatment, they could submit admission application to SMU before the next school year. Diagnosed and approved by appointed hospitals and university, students go through the formality of enrollment. Those who fail to be qualified or fail to apply for re-admission will be deprived of their admission qualification.

 

Article 2 The basic length of undergraduate program for oversea students is 4 years. Based on credit system, flexible educational system is adopted. The longest length of schooling is 8 years, and those who fail to complete studies within that period will NOT be registered. During basic period of schooling (4 years), students who meet the requirements of graduation could apply for early graduation. Students, who for some reasons are not able to graduate on time, could apply for the extension of study (at most 4 years, suspension period included). 

 

Article 3 After course selection, students shall attend course assessment. Students could get course credit only when they pass the exam. Hundred-mark Scale and Grade System (A, B, C, D, F) would be applied. Students who get at least D (≥60) could get the course credit.

 

Article 4 Students who are absent without approval for more than 1/3 of total class hours of a course, or fail to hand in assignments for more than 1/3 of total tasks, shall NOT be allowed to take the final exam of that course. The result will be marked as F or failure.

 

Article 5 Attendance System is applied. Students who are not able to be present in class for sickness or other affairs shall submit written application to the department for leaves. Those who are absent from class without asking for leaves, without approval or exceeding their leaves will be marked as cutting class.

 

Article 6 Make-up examination and re-taking the course are employed. If students fail in the assessment, they could take make-up examination of that course held in next semester. The result will be marked as "60" or "pass". If students fail in make-up examination of compulsory course(s), they shall re-attend that course to get credit. But for electives, they can choose to either re -attend the course or take another course.
